Gutter Cleaning

Eugene Clogged Gutters

When it comes to keeping your home in good shape, your gutters count for a lot. Unfortunately, because they are difficult to reach, it’s all too easy to neglect them until there’s a significant problem.

Clogged gutters can do some real damage to your property, which is why keeping them clean is necessary. So, with that in mind, we want to cover six common signs that your gutters are clogged and need to be cleaned ASAP.

#1 Gutters are Sagging

Water and debris can be quite heavy. As they accumulate inside your gutters, the aluminum sides will start to bend or buckle. If you notice any bumps along the sides of your house, chances are that you have a clog.

#2 Nests and Pests

Water is a literal breeding ground for many insects, not the least of which are mosquitoes. Rats and birds can also appreciate a good pool of water, which means that your gutters can become a haven for all kinds of critters. Bird’s nests along the gutters, as well as an increase in pest populations,  can be a sign of clogging.

#3 Last Cleaning Was Forever Ago

Ideally, you’ll clean out your gutters every year. However, if you think that the last time you did that was during the Obama administration (or Bush Jr.), you’re well past due for a cleaning. Even if it’s just been a couple of years, dirt and debris can accumulate quickly, meaning that you should act before winter comes.

#4 Plants or Moss Growing

Realistically, you shouldn’t let your gutters get to the point where a small garden can sprout up. However, as dirt and water sit inside a clogged drain, seeds can germinate and thrive. Not only will plants continue to clog the gutter itself, but the roots can cause further damage.

#5 Water Spilling

One of the easiest ways to tell if your gutters are clogged or overfull is if water starts cascading off the side. While massive rainfall can also cause this, chances are that something is obstructing the passageway.

#6 Siding Stains

Standing water inside your gutters is not only a haven for pests, but it can get really dirty really fast. Algae and other elements can turn rainwater into a science project, which will stain your siding as it drips down. So, if you spot some dirty splatter below your gutters, it’s probably time to clean them.
